Summer Writing Worshops for Kids & Teens

In these not-like-school workshops, young writers will have fun exploring their creativity in a safe and encouraging environment. Worskhop facilitators are experienced teachers and writers who are skilled at helping young writers overcome the anxiety and fear typically associated with writing. 


Workshops are limited to 10 writers each so early registration is encouraged. 


Sessions held at the Namaste Center in Downtown Long Beach. Two hour free parking in the City Place Shopping Center.

Jumpin’ Genres: Practice writing fiction and nonfiction through draw and write activities.

Grades 1-4


In this fun and creative writing workshop, young writers will review the elements of nonfiction and through draw write activities. Editing will not be stressed in this workshop, instead we will focus on the elements of genre writing and ways to reduce writers’ block.

Creative Writing for fiction & memoir writers

Ages 13 - 18

This fun and interactive workshop is for writers at all levels. We will spend each session creating new material, leaning about craft and how to improve our stories. Get help developing your story, or learn how to create a new story from scratch. Writers will also practice reading and responding to each other’s work. Bring your writing journal and your story                                                      ideas!


          June 26 – 29, July 10-13, or July 17-20

World Building for fantasy and sci-fi writers

Ages 13 - 18

World building is the art of constructing the imaginary world in which your characters live and play. In this specialized workshop, you will learn how to create coherent and engaging worlds—from the landscape to the rules that govern man and nature and everything in between. World building is fun and helps writers practice attention to details and story development.

Creative Writing Instructor


Desiree is the founder and lead faciltator of Rose Writers Workshop. She has a MFA in Creative Writing from Antioch University and a teaching credential from CSULB.  She has taught all grades, including college. Teaching is a passion for Desiree and she loves to share her joy of writing with young writers. 


Julie Borkin

K-5 Writing Instructor/Tutor

Julie is a credentialed teacher with 20 years of experience in grades K-8. She has a BA in Creative Writing and earned her teaching credential from Cal State Northridge. She has worked on curriculum development and is profecient with current Common Core Standards.  Julie is skilled at planning creative and engaging lessons and activities and she loves to help young readers and writers gain confidence and skills.
