Spring 2018 Schedule & Course Descriptions

Classes and workshops for students in middle and high school.

The classes below are designed to help young writers tap into their creativity, explore ideas, learn about craft, and develop writing skills they can use in any genre.

All courses lead by Desiree Kannel

Creative Writing Workshops

Grades 7 - 12

Wednesdays, 1:00 - 2:30pm

Students will generate new material, learn the basics of  story telling, revising, and publishing.

A typical session’s format:

Workshop: the part of the lesson where students write quietly after receiving a writing prompt or suggestion. Sharing of our “first draft, just written work” follows; one student reads, the others listen and respond with positive and encouraging feedback.

Mini lessons: we will cover the nuts and bolts of crafting a narrative (stories-real or imagined). Topics include: character development, descriptive details, dialogue, plot, conflict, and more.

Revise/polish/publish: After generating various story ideas, students will choose one to take to completion. We will apply what we learned about craft during the revision process.  They will also learn how to read and respond to their classmates works in progress.

Minimum of 5; maximum of 10 students.

Materials needed: pens, notebook, paper, drawing supplies, access to word processing and ability to bring typed copies of drafts to class.

Handouts provided by instructor.

Composition & Visual Rhetoric

Grades 9 - 12

15 weeks

Along with traditional methods, visual rhetoric is used as a mode of instruction in this 15 week course. Technological advances have created a world in which a substantial portion of our communication is done via visuals, rather than the written word. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and others are saturated with images that are meant to relay not just cute and funny messages, but often critical arguments.

In addition to reading short essays and stories, students will also learn how to “read” images such as ads, street art and graffiti. In the first half of the course, we will practice creative writing techniques and produce a written personal narrative that incorporates elements related to document design and presentation. In the second half of the course, we will read and research a topic related to contemporary American culture and produce visual arguments. We will also learn how to “read” visuals such as street art, graffiti, advertisements, and more.
